Berlin, March 19th 2024 – Small fleets with fewer than 20 vehicles are pioneers in electrification. In January 2024, nine percent of passenger cars in small fleets were electric, nine times more than five years ago. Fleets with more than 200 vehicles currently have an electrification rate of five percent, putting them behind companies that operate fleets of between 20 and 200 vehicles; as of January 2024, eight percent of their cars were electric. Shiftmove, a pioneer in digital fleet management, analyzed more than 140,000 passenger cars in Avrios- and Vimcar-enabled customer fleets by fleet size, motorization and vehicle manufacturer for this study.
Diesel share for fleet cars down 16 percent since 2019
The proportion of diesel vehicles in the passenger car segment has fallen steadily across all fleet sizes since 2019, with small and medium-sized fleets decreasing by 17 percent and large fleets by 15 percent. In January 2024, 67 percent of cars in large fleets still ran on diesel, compared to 61 percent in medium-sized fleets and only around one in two cars (55 percent) in small fleets. Small fleets have gradually replaced diesel vehicles (minus 17 percent) with electric cars and hybrids (together plus 17 percent) over the last five years. In fleets of all sizes, one in ten cars is now a hybrid.
"The majority of companies are lagging behind in the transition to e-mobility. At the same time, we see that many companies are electrifying small parts of their fleet in order to learn how e-mobility works and can be fully integrated into the company's processes by 2030. There are still many challenges, such as the charging infrastructure. But the pressure for more sustainability in the vehicle fleet is increasing rapidly. From 2026/2027, we will see a significant increase in electrification," says Francine Gervazio, CEO Shiftmove.
Volkswagen dominates German fleets - Toyota top in hybrids
When it comes to the choice of vehicle manufacturer, fleet managers of all sizes agree: Volkswagen clearly dominates with a 25 percent share for diesel, petrol and electric cars. Only in the area of hybrid vehicles is Toyota (21 percent) the first choice for fleets with more than 200 vehicles, Mercedes (16 percent) and BMW (15 percent) for medium-sized fleets. Those responsible for smaller fleets most frequently choose BMW (14 percent). Tesla makes it into the top 3 for electric cars in small and medium-sized fleets with a share of 9 and 8 percent respectively. In larger fleets, the US car manufacturer only ranks 6th (6 percent).
Data is the key to greater electrification
Digital fleet management solutions enable fleet managers to make strategic decisions based on data. This holistic overview of their own fleet also enables them to identify the electrification potential of the fleet and optimize it for the increasing sustainability requirements. "To date, only 20 to 30 percent of European companies use fleet management software at all," says Gervazio. "As digitalization progresses, we will also see greater electrification."
